What is a Canadian / Super Yankee Bet?

canadian flagAlso referred to as a Super Yankee wager, a Canadian features five selections in separate events: one five-fold, five four-folds, ten doubles and ten trebles. In a Canadian, at least two selections must be successful to get any return.

When you place a Canadian wager, you bet the same stake per bet, which means you need to wager the same amount 26x. If you decide to place a £1 wager, you will be wagering £26 in total.

The Origin of the Canadian

A Canadian is closely related to a Lucky betting system. Invented by Fred Done, the Lucky betting system consists of three main types, which include Lucky 15, Lucky 31 and Lucky 63. Similar to these betting systems, a Canadian also has various parts and many bets, which are 26 in total.

The Canadian utilises the Lucky betting concept, with the only difference being singles are not covered so at least two of the five selections must be successful to gain some profits. Betting enthusiasts invented a Canadian bet because they wanted players to cover as many bets as possible on 5 selections in a single pre-packaged wager.

A Canadian Example

Let’s take five football teams from the EPL: Chelsea, Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham United. You are confident of all these selections succeeding in different games during a busy weekend. For easy calculation and understanding, let’s consider that your sportsbook of choice offers the same odds of 4/1 for the success of every selection. Also, let’s assume that you are placing a £1 bet on each of the 26 wagers available. Your total stake will be £26 when applied independently to each wager that’s part of the betting system.

You stand to lose the whole £26 stake if just one of the teams manages to win since this bet doesn’t have the single bets section. You’ll only make a return from this betting system if two of the teams win.  Having just two winners from 5 will give you something back but it may not cover your entire stake.

To earn a return higher than your stake, the two successful selections need to have larger odds, so in this case, your winning picks must be West Ham United and Everton or Crystal Palace and West Ham United. Most bookies will tend to offer larger odds on these types of teams when the are playing top teams.

This betting system starts to reward more if a minimum of three selections are successful. Based on this example, you would be looking at a decent £200 return and a return above stake of £174. This is as a result of the success of the double and treble bets. The four-fold and five-fold accumulators can provide higher returns. If you manage to get all the five selections right, you will be looking to walk away with £7,750 in total returns from a stake of £26.

What Does A Super Yankee Pay?

uk money different coin valuesTaking a simple example where every selection in your Canadian bet is 4/1 and you bet £1 / line, i.e. £26 total, the following outcomes would give the following returns.

  • Five Winners = £7,750 (£7,724 net return)
  • Four Winners = £1,275 (£1,249 net return)
  • Three Winners = £200 (£174 net return)
  • Two Winners = £25 (-£1 net return)
  • One Winner = £0 (-£26 net return)
  • No Winners = £0 (-£26 net return)

Here you need at least two winners to get anything back, but this is still £1 less than you staked.  If three out of five win you make a positive return.

If you placed the whole £26 on a single 5-fold acca you could win £81,250, but of course you will lose that bet if one selection loses.  This is the whole point of a Canadian, it gives you a chance to get a return if 2-5 of the selections win.

What Canadian Bet Looks Like

bag of money different sized piles of cash next to it

You can place a Canadian on different sports, including horse racing and football. Since football is the most popular sport, let’s use it to illustrate how a Canadian bet works. You make five selections from a busy weekend of football, and here are your picks:

  • Everton to beat Manchester City
  • Brighton to beat Newcastle United
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton
  • Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal

From these selections, a total of 26 wagers across different types of bets would be created. There would be one five-fold accumulator, five four-fold accumulators, ten treble wagers, and ten double wagers. The sportsbook will represent these bets as follows.

Ten Trebles

  • Everton to defeat Manchester City, Brighton to defeat Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers to defeat Southampton.
  • Brighton to defeat Newcastle United, Crystal Palace to defeat Tottenham Hotspur and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Chelsea to defeat Arsenal, Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to defeat Manchester City.
  • Crystal Palace to defeat Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers to defeat Southampton and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Chelsea to defeat Arsenal, Wolverhampton to defeat Southampton and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Crystal Palace to defeat Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea to defeat Arsenal and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Brighton to defeat Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers to defeat Southampton and Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur.
  • Brighton to defeat Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers to defeat Southampton and Chelsea to beat Arsenal.
  • Chelsea to defeat Arsenal, Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton to defeat Newcastle United.
  • Chelsea to defeat Arsenal, Wolverhampton to defeat Southampton and Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Ten Doubles

  • Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Crystal Palace to bet Tottenham Hotspur and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton and Brighton to beat Newcastle United.
  • Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton to beat Newcastle United.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal and Brighton to defeat Newcastle United.
  • Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal and Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Five Four-Fold Accumulators

  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal, Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton and Brighton to beat Newcastle United.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal, Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal, Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Chelsea to beat Arsenal, Wolverhampton to beat Southampton, Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to beat Manchester City.
  • Crystal Palace to beat Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Southampton, Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to beat Manchester City.

One Five-Fold Accumulator

  • Chelsea to defeat Arsenal, Crystal Palace to defeat Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers to defeat Southampton, Brighton to beat Newcastle United and Everton to defeat Manchester City.

With this example, you will win if any of these outcomes occur, but the winning amount will change depending on the combination. For example, if you win the five-fold accumulator, you’ll win more than if one of the double bets is successful. That is because it’s more challenging to predict five outcomes than two.

Ultimately if you place £26 just on a 5-fold acca your returns will be far higher than a Canadian if all 5 picks are successful.  If one pick fails to win, though, the whole bet is down.  With a Canadian you can get a return if 2, 3 or 4 selections win, as well as 5, and that is the attraction of the bet.  It is called a full cover bet as it fully covers all possible multiple bets from 5 given selections.

What is an Each-Way Canadian Bet?

In an Each-Way Canadian, each wager is an Each-Way bet. That means the total stake is double that of a standard Canadian, and in total, there are 52 bets, 26 wagers for the place section and 26 for the win part.

An Each-Way Canadian bet is popular among punters who love placing bets on racing, including greyhound and horse events.

What Sports Allow Super Yankee Bets?

Most popular sports allow you to take advantage of a Canadian bet’s benefits. Whether you love football, basketball, volleyball, motorsports, greyhound racing or horse racing, any selection from different events will work well with a Canadian bet.

You should not limit yourself to a single sport, you can mix and match any single bets in a Canadian as long as they are all different events, e.g. you couldn’t combine 5 different markets from within one match into a Canadian.

A Canadian vs a Lucky 31: Are they the Same?

The key difference between A Lucky 31 and a Canadian bet is that the former includes five single wagers, taking the total number of bets from 26 to 31. This means A Lucky 31 consists of 31 bets while a Canadian features 26 wagers.
